Internal Medicine Residency
Program Mission
The mission of the BUMC Internal Medicine Program is to passionately teach the art and science of internal medicine in a holistic and inclusive learning environment where residents gain personalized training to prepare them to care for the diverse patient population as internists or internal medicine subspecialists.
To accomplish this mission:
-
We maintain an inpatient service that is able to select cases to provide the best learning opportunities for residents at a large, inner-city, hospital with exposure to a wide variety of conditions
-
Daily didactic conferences include lectures from our sub-specialty programs as well as renowned and diverse lecturers with a special emphasis on training that includes sensitivity to cultural values and social determinants of health
-
Residents gain experience in a variety of settings including continuity charity-care clinics and the Dallas VA Medical Center
-
Our institution hosts a wide variety of fellowship programs (including Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Interventional Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Transplant Hepatology, Hematology-Medical Oncology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, and Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine) in which the residents have the opportunity to explore and gain experience in any of these sub-specialties and more during their training
-
We offer specialized training pathways for residents interested in careers as hospitalists or in ambulatory medicine
-
Residents are able to customize their experience during their 2nd and 3rd years with numerous of elective rotation options
-
The program directors meet with residents on a monthly basis to address problems and concerns and ensure that all perspectives are heard and valued
What Makes Us Unique
Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) began as a 25 bed hospital in 1903, but has since grown into the flagship campus for Baylor Scott and White (BSW) Hospitals in North Texas. We are an academic center affiliated with Texas A&M Health Science Center providing state-of-the-art care for patients in North Texas. Our patients are referred from hospitals throughout North Texas, neighboring states, as well as other BSW Hospitals for the specialized care available only at BUMC. BUMC has 914 beds, serves over 300,000 people per year, and includes a cancer hospital, heart & vascular hospital, and a level 1 trauma center.
Our patient population reflects our location and capabilities. We equally serve patients who travel long distances just for our specialists at a quaternary health care center and the uninsured living within our inner city.
Our educators are nationally recognized in their specialties, providing top notch education to residents and serving as mentors and role models.
In addition to working at BUMC, we also rotate through the Dallas Veterans Affairs hospital. This allows us to learn the intricacies of multiple hospital systems and work closely with residents and faculty from other local GME programs.
BUMC offers a spectrum of opportunities during residency ranging from first rate clinical training, cutting edge clinical research, focus on wellness and personalized career counseling.
